The Island
Equator Village is a resort with a difference. It has had an interesting
history. Located just half a degree below the equator, the lush, tree-filled
island of Gan was used by the British as an air force and naval outpost from
1956 to 1976. The handsome building which now houses the reception, bar, and
restaurant was originally an officers club and the large guest rooms were
once accommodation to high-ranking officers.
Accomodation
78 spacious, air-conditioned rooms are arranged among mature bougainvillea
trees, hibiscus and even rose bushes. Set in these carefully tended gardens
is an attractive, free-sized swimming pool.
Dining
The hotel staff are always courteous and the chefs produce delicious and varied
meals three times a day. Afternoon tea and snacks is served each afternoon in
the breezy lounge.
Diving
Like in Embudu, Diverland operates the dive school on Gan. The resident base
leader and co-owner Detlef along with instructor Juergen and the crew lead exciting
diving trips to a number of sites in the area. Like the massive, 130 metre British
Loyalty wreck that lies just off the neighbouring island Hithadhoo. Hit by a
Japanese torpedo during WW2 a huge hole in its hull provides fruitful and fish-filled
explorations. They also show divers how the coral-life in the area is totally
unaffected by coral bleaching and is simply spectacular.
Activities
The excellent tennis court and antique snooker table are relics of a bygone
age. Other out-of-water sport facilities include indoor games, volleyball, table
tennis and bicycle hire free to hotel guests. There are three other islands
beyond Gan you can visit and these bikes make them fun to explore. The people
who reside in the three other linked islands of Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo
are just about the friendliest you’ll meet anywhere. An insight into their tranquil
lives seen from the seat of a bicycle in the late afternoon is a delight. The
white coral roads take you across each island and the causeways that connect
them, and the resort’s sturdy bikes will easily carry you the whole 16 km and
back!
